MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATIONS MODULE
WORKING WITH OTHERS, HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, CARERS AND FAMILIES
This module will provide you with knowledge and skills in working with others to assist clients in their recovery journey. In this course, occupational therapists will understand the role and contribution of different mental health workforces, the vital role of families and carers, and the importance of other coordinator and intermediary roles in delivering effective mental health occupational therapy.
Built on the OTA Mental Health Capability Framework, this self-directed eLearning and Development Module will assist occupational therapists in focusing their scope of practice on mental health to build foundational knowledge and skills in Working with Others, Health Professionals, Carers and Families to assist clients in their recovery journey.
Developed by OTs for OTs, this module provides an introduction to Working with Others, Health Professionals, Carers and Families to both assist clients in their recovery journey and demonstrate the importance of these roles in delivering effective mental health occupational therapy.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Identify and explain the fundamental principles of care coordination in mental health practice, and how they are applied in the context of occupational therapy.
- Identify skills to coordinate, facilitate, and integrate mental health treatment, care, and support based on individual consumer needs.
- Demonstrate the ability to utilise mental health systems and supports effectively as part of care coordination.
- Understand the role and contribution of families and carers in the consumer's recovery journey.
- Develop skills to engage and collaborate with families and carers in mental health care planning and intervention.
- Recognise the impact of caregiving on the well-being of family members and carers and facilitate their access to support services that support their capacity and wellbeing.
- Describe the structure, dynamics, roles and contributions of multidisciplinary mental health teams.
- Advocate for the mental health occupational therapy role within a multidisciplinary team.
- Develop strategies to collaborate effectively and make appropriate referrals with other mental health professionals to optimise consumer outcomes.
- Explain the role and contribution of lived experience workforces in mental health practice, within a recovery-oriented context.
- Develop strategies to support the integration of lived experience approaches into occupational therapy therapeutic interventions and recovery planning.
- Explain the roles and purposes of care coordinators, recovery coaches, and other intermediary roles in mental health care, and how these complement and intersect with the occupational therapists’ role.
- Develop skills to form and maintain collaborative relationships with care coordinators and recovery coaches.
- Implement occupational therapy interventions that incorporate the support of intermediary roles to enhance consumer outcomes.
